When you spend the bulk of your time caring for and worrying about an aging or ailing spouse, it can be easy to forget to make time for yourself. Self-care, however, can be essential for you and for your spouse. Making time to care for yourself and your own personal needs can allow you to be your best self so that you can be there for the one you hold most dear.

Self-care does not have to be a massive time commitment, it can be something that only takes a few minutes out of your day. You could start a daily journal to jot down a few thoughts, feelings, or goals for yourself. You could find a quiet place to sit and enjoy a few minutes of silence and reflection. You could go for a walk. You could get together, in person or virtually, with friends or family who put a smile on your face. You could simply vow to eat healthier or get more sleep every day. The possibilities for self-care may be endless. The goal is to prioritize doing something to better yourself.

Finally, use this month of self-care to review whether or not you are not taking on too much. Being the primary caregiver for your spouse can be overwhelming and stressful as you wonder what the future may hold. It can be important that you understand that there may be many resources at your disposal. Make use of them! You do not need to do this alone.

A great place to start taking care of yourself may be by talking to an elder law attorney.
